Essay Writing in a College or University

A recent article from Education Week highlighted the need for colleges and universities to develop policies and curriculum requirements particularly addressing composition writing. Ellen Goodman, a professor at Teachers College, Columbia University and also co-chair of this Committee on Academic Competitiveness, told the magazine which”many colleges and universities provide little if any academic support for teaching faculty essays,” which is something she has observed through the years.”Even high-performing pupils from some of our country’s most elite business schools seldom possess required writing skills” She points to quite a few issues with writing essays, such as their ineffectiveness as a way to prepare students for school and also the fact that many students do not even have the writing skills needed to prepare for school essays.

Goodman’s research demonstrates that although students do not appear to enjoy writing essays, then they are frequently conscious of how much more they will need to know in order to do well in college. She recommends that colleges and universities develop writing needs and instruct students how to compose essays effectively but that writing skills are not developed through formal education.

Asking high school pupils who do not have a strong writing history how much they understand about writing essays and making a point of asking them to draft essays on subjects like food, animals, or even the surroundings, is a fantastic method to evaluate the level of awareness students have about writing essays. While students do not always need formal writing education to develop their own writing abilities, it’s likely to help them improve their essay writing skills by offering them with a mission which requires them to compose an essay for another student. When writing essays, students must be encouraged to read more and to take a variety of notes throughout their writing, so they can acquire a better understanding of what it is that they must incorporate in their article.

It appears that college students don’t have the same writing demands as high school students, who might also find it difficult to understand the importance of a suitable essay. Students should obtain an assignment that requires them to construct an essay from start to end, so they can examine, edit, and revise their essay after it’s complete.

The shortage of writing experience among high school students doesn’t mean that they cannot gain from a mission, however, and many students do. Find that composing essays are especially valuable when preparing for standardized tests, such as the SAT or GRE.

High school students often don’t have the chance to work with professors or even to become chilled in college literature, which allows them to create a feeling of freedom and confidence when writing. Essay writing helps students to develop their own special perspective and point of view on a given subject, which they can use to express themselves in a purposeful manner. Writing essays may also help to develop critical thinking and other composing skills which could be applied in their future career endeavors.
